WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST COACHING POSITION:
I coached “Learn to Speed Skate” in High School and coached a program called “Motor Activities at X” (MAX) for kids with autism while attending University.
COACHING PHILOSOPHY:
If it's not fun...you're doing it wrong!
WHO INSPIRES YOU:
My Mom inspires me! (Kathy Yurris) She coached speed skating and hockey when my siblings and I were growing up. Her enthusiasm and strong beliefs of fair play and having fun have really stuck with me. I was lucky to have some amazing coaches throughout my speed skating and hockey career, coaches with positive attitudes and the love of their sport like Rob Tordoff (Yellowknife Minor Hockey), Jessica Cox (AWG 2012) and Debby Fisher (Calgary Olympic Oval) have really left an impression on me. But my biggest inspiration are the athletes! Seeing smiles on faces at the arena is a great feeling.
BARRIERS YOU’VE EXPERIENCED:
I was a little apprehensive to start coaching in the North as I am quite a bit younger than most other coaches and do not have the same
experience. However, I have received nothing but support! The sporting community in the NWT is very welcoming and full of opportunity, I'd love to see more of my peers, especially women, get into coaching.
