In the 1970’s, at a time when the Arctic Winter Games were occurring every two years, and the Territorial Experimental Ski Training program was in its early stages, the demand for services for sport was increasing. A group of sport minded individuals came up with the idea of forming one coordinated sport governing body for the NWT. This body would be governed by organized sport and would not be an agency of the government.
A meeting was held with the Commissioner, Stuart Hodgson, who approved for the Sport Federation to be funded through lottery sales and the federation came into existence. Individual sports were brought together to form one coordinated body and most of the demands for services were met in a more efficient and cost effective way.
