Niagara 2022 Canada Summer Games Eligibility Restrictions

Eligibility restrictions are aligned to the “Train to Compete” phase of the sport’s Long Term Athlete Development Model (LTAD), or other suitable phase of LTAD, as justified by the National Sport Organization and approved by the Canada Games Council (CGC).

Eligibility restrictions pertain only to the sport in question (i.e. if an athlete has competed in a Senior World Championship in baseball, they are still eligible to compete in the Canada Games in golf).

The CGC Sport Committee has approved the eligibility restrictions for the following sports on the 2022 Canada Summer Games program:

Athletics

Excluded from the Canada Games are:

  • Senior National Team Members - defined as: Athletes  who have held an SR, SR1, SR2 or C1 card at any time; and/or, athletes who are part of (on the roster of) a standing Senior National Team (i.e. recognized as a Senior National Team member regardless of event participation)
  • Athletes who have previously competed at the following events:
    • IPC/IAAF World Championships
    • Olympic/Paralympic Games
    • Pan Am/Parapan Am Games
    • Commonwealth Games

Basketball

Excluded from the Canada Games are:

  • Senior National Team members - defined as: athletes  who have held an SR, SR1, SR2 or C1 card at any time; and/or athletes who are part of (on the roster of) a standing Senior National Team (i.e. recognized as Senior National Team member regardless of event participation)
  • Athletes who have previously competed at the following events:
    • Senior World Championships
    • Olympic Games
    • Commonwealth Games
    • Pan Am Games
    • FISU Games

Golf

Excluded from the Canada Games are:

  • Senior National Team Members - defined as: Athletes  who have held an SR, SR1, SR2 or C1 card at any time; and/or athletes who are part of (on the roster of) a standing Senior National Team (i.e. recognized as Senior National Team member regardless of event participation)
  • Athletes who have previously competed at the following events:
    • Senior World Championships
    • Olympic Games
    • Pan Am Games
  • Athletes who have declared themselves professional.

Soccer

Excluded from the Canada Games are:

  • Senior National Team Members - defined as: Athletes who have held an SR, SR1, SR2 or C1 card at any time; and/or athletes who are part of (on the roster of) a standing Senior National Team (i.e. recognized as Senior National Team member regardless of event participation).
  • Athletes who have previously competed at the following events:
    • FIFA World Cup
    • Olympic Games
    • Pan Am Games
    • Commonwealth Games
    • FISU Games
  • Professional athletes - A Professional is a player who has a written contract with a club and is paid more than the expenses he/she effectively incurs in return for his/her  soccer activity. All other players are considered as Amateurs (no athlete can be rendered ineligible within 90 days of the opening of the games due to signing  a  professional contract).

Swimming

Excluded from the Canada Games are:

  • Senior National Team Members - defined as: Athletes  who have held an SR, SR1, SR2 or C1 card at any time; and/or, athletes who are part of (on the roster of) a standing Senior National Team (i.e. recognized as a Senior National Team member regardless of event participation)
  • Athletes who have previously competed at the following events:
    • Olympic/Paralympic Games
    • Commonwealth Games
    • Pan Am/Parapan Am Games
    • FISU Games
    • Pan-Pacific Championships/Pan-Pacific Para-Swimming Championships
    • FINA World Aquatic Championships/WPS  Swimming World Championships

Tennis

Excluded from the Canada Games are:

  • Senior National Team Members - defined as: Athletes  who have held an SR, SR1, SR2 or C1 card at any time; and/or athletes who are part of (on the roster of) a standing Senior National Team (i.e. recognized as Senior National Team member regardless of event participation)
  • Athletes who have previously competed at the following events:
    • Senior World Championships
    • Olympic Games
    • Commonwealth Games
    • Pan Am Games
    • FISU Games

Volleyball - Indoor

Excluded from the Canada Games are:

  • Senior National Team Members - defined as: Athletes who have held an SR, SR1, SR2 or C1 card at any time; and/or, athletes who are part of (on the roster of) a standing Senior National Team (i.e. recognized as a Senior National Team member regardless of event participation)
  • Athletes who have previously competed at the following events:
    • Senior World Championships
    • Olympic Games
    • Commonwealth Games
    • Pan Am Games
    • FISU Games

Wrestling

Excluded from the Canada Games are:

  • Senior National Team Members - defined as: Athletes  who have held an SR, SR1, SR2 or C1 card at any time; and/or athletes who are part of (on the roster of) a standing Senior National Team (i.e. recognized as Senior National Team member regardless of event participation)
  • Athletes who have previously competed at the following events:
    • Senior World Championships
    • Olympic Games
    • Commonwealth Games
    • Pan Am Games
    • FISU Games

**NOTE for all above sports:

No athlete can be rendered ineligible within 90 days of the opening of the Games due to National Team status, carding status or competing in an excluded event (i.e., if an athlete  is granted National Team status for the first time, carding status or competed in an excluded event after May 8, 2022 they will still be considered eligible to compete at the 2021 Canada Games).
